A Note on R&D Innovation with Socially Responsible Firms

چکیده
Abstract This work revisits the R&D duopoly à la (d’Aspremont and Jacquemin, Am Econ Rev 78:1133–1137, 1988, d’Aspremont 80:641–642, 1990) (AJ henceforth) considering an economy with firms engaged in corporate social responsibility (CSR). In traditional AJ setting without spill-over effects, invest as a sub-game perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE) strategy, but they are cast into prisoner’s dilemma. Socially responsible can get same SPNE result. Preliminarily, we show that level of firms’ concern has positive effect on investment. Unlike basic framework, however, if consumer welfare weights enough each firm’s objective, investing becomes utility-enhancing strategy also spillovers: dilemma vanishes, investment-decision game CSR turns out to be anti-prisoner’s dilemma, which is Pareto-efficient choice. Then, CSR-oriented, Pareto-superior outcome for society (with or spillovers). The article shows subsidies used welfare-maximising tool.

The wicked problem of socially responsible innovation.
O ne of the goals of our article on the DNA of Socially Responsible Innovation (SRI) was to start a discussion on how to implement SRI in research and development (R&D). We are therefore grateful for the contribution by Dove and Özdemir; we feel that exactly such dialogue is necessary to advance innovation to the next level. We acknowledge that the “ecosystem” of science, technology and society...

Academic research, in particular of the applied nature, is more frequently done in collaboration with industrial partners and attracts funding from industry or private foundations that support research. Even public funding agencies increasingly require scientists to justify their work b...
متن کاملWhy do socially responsible firms pay more dividends?
Using a sample of 22,389 US firm-year observations over the period from 1991 to 2012, we find that high CSR firms pay more dividends than low CSR firms. This is consistent with our expectation that socially responsible firms may use the dividend policy to manage the agency problems related to overinvestment in CSR. The analysis of individual components of CSR provides strong support for this ma...
متن کاملIncentives, performance and desirability of socially responsible firms in a Cournot oligopoly ¬リニ
a r t i c l e i n f o This paper investigates how socially responsible behaviour influences firms' profits and social welfare when production entails an environmental externality. We study a Cournot oligopoly with pollution, with one CSR operating in the market. A CSR firm not only takes into account its profits but also internalises its own share of pollution and is sensitive to consumer surpl...
